Cyber Essentials Certification

Industry views

When the minister for digital and culture spoke in London on cyber risk, he strongly encouraged UK businesses to adopt Cyber Essentials, “We know the scale of the threat is significant.” He added, “My message is clear: if you’re not concentrating on cyber, you are courting chaos and catering to criminals.”

Cyber Essentials, a government-backed, industry supported scheme, is a set of best practice controls against which organisations can be assessed to a certified standard. The scheme was specifically designed and updated to help British businesses mitigate cyber risk, whilst also clearly demonstrating to customers, suppliers, investors and insurers that they have implemented essential security controls to manage cyber risk.

The Government already requires many of its suppliers to hold Cyber Essentials and this move is being followed by some of the largest names in UK industry: Barclays, BT, Vodafone, Astra Zeneca and Airbus. With the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) now also on the horizon, understanding the location of data and measures in place to protect it is only set to become increasingly important.

Over the last 6-12 months, we have already seen a notable increase in the recognised importance of security hygiene; Cyber Essentials is more than a solid best practice framework, we’re seeing it flow across industry as a required standard and business differentiator.
